2-time National Champ Leila Hurst carves to victory in the Open Womens.
NSSA Hawaii event #7 at Turtle Bay kicked off with sun, wind, rain and some decent surf. On Saturday, November 7, competition got underway for the Open divisions and a portion of the Explorer divisions. The NSSA Judges sat at the point to have a perfect view of how hard the surfers were ripping. The contest saw quite a few stand-out surfers. Seth Moniz was the one and only surfer who scored perfect 10’s across the board. Reigning National Open Boy’s and Explorer Menehuene Champion Ian Gentil blew up on one of his waves and came close to scoring perfection posting a 9.8. Ian delivered a tremendous surfing display all weekend taking double victories in the Open Juniors and Explorer Juniors. Kauai’s Leila Hurst was on fire and took the win in the Open Womens division. Another impressive Kauai up-and-comer is Kiana Fores who took the win in the Explorer Girls division. Kaimana Jaquias was in dominating form capturing a huge double win in both the Open Men’s and Explorer Men’s. Kalani David took the victory in Explorer Menehuene and also made finals in the Open Boys and Explorer Boys. Congratulations to all of our standouts for their outstanding performances this past weekend.
NSSA Hawaii would like to thank Turtle Bay for welcoming the NSSA and permitting us to have an amazing contest. We look forward to our next contest there!
NSSA Hawaii thanks our 2009-10 season sponsors: RVCA, Vans, Xcel, Koa Tree Foundation, Bubble Gum, Surf Co, Jason Nalu Bogle, Wahoos Fish Tacos, Kalani Robb, Aloha Kine.

JUNIORS FINAL WINNER LAHIKI MINAMISHIN
NSSA Hawaii event #6 enjoyed great conditions at PK’s on the south shore of Hawaii. The Open divisions kicked off Saturday’s competition with good 3-6 foot surf and warm sunny weather. Lucas Angulo took his first win in the Open Boys division while Nage Melamed took her first win of the season in the Open Women's division. Bailey Nagy who competes in Open Womens, Explorer Womens and Explorer Girls has had a tremendous season making all three finals in her divisions. She has made finals in all of her divisions at every contest so far this season and now increases her finals streak to six…Impressive! At this event, Bailey took first in the Explorer Girls final. We also saw some big scores being thrown by Kalani David and Keanu Asing. Kalani was showing all the people on the beach what perfect 10's across the board looks like. Keanu Asing was ripping and got an excellent 9.75 in the Open Men's final which sealed the victory in the Open Men's. Lahiki Minamishin took the Open Juniors win while Ka’oli Kahokuloa’s third place finish secured his number one ranking in the division. Sunday was another beautiful, hot and long day on the beach. One of NSSA Hawaii's biggest supporters fell and broke his ankle and wrist while watching his daughter surf her heat.... He is going to be alright it will just take sometime to heal! So from NSSA HAWAII to Andy Melamed, keep your head up and heal up soon! Our Pull In Awards of the contest went to Kalen Galtes and Nage Melamed for making two finals each.

Kylen Yamakawa, Cole Yamakawa, Keala Naihe, Dylan Aoki Walsh, Makai McNamara
The NSSA Hawaii event #5 went off at Sunset Beach on October 10-11 and we scored pumping 5-7 foot surf Hawaiian scale! The waves were great, the surfing was awesome and the 25 minute finals for the Open divisions gave the kids a chance to charge a little longer and a little harder. The young girls were ripping in the massive surf. We saw 11-year-old Mahina Maeda take control of the Explorer Women’s final and take a huge victory! Mahina won the “Pull In Award” which is awarded to the outstanding female and male surfer of the contest. Another inspiring performance was delivered by 13-year-old Bailey Nagy who made all three of her finals. The Men’s competitors were charging. Kylen Yamakawa, who took a fifth in the Open Men’s final won the “Pull In Award” for the guys. Elliott Leon nailed his first win of the season in the Explorer Juniors win. Makai McNamara took his first win in the Open Juniors with a near perfection 9.5 ride. He also put on an impressive performance in the highly competitive Open Men’s division taking sixth in the final. Tanner Hendrickson and Koa Smith were also awarded excellent 9.5 scores in the Open Mens division. Tanner has been unstoppable this season taking both the Open and Explorer Men’s wins in this contest. He has won three straight in the Open Men’s, two straight in Explorer Men’s and has six total victories this year. He will definitely be one of the hottest contenders for the National title in 2010. The Open Boys and Mini Groms were killing it too with Seth Moniz winning the Boys for his fifth win of the season and Cody Young taking his first win of the year with an outstanding performance in the Mini Groms. We were so proud how hard everyone of them charged!!!
OPEN WOMENS FINALISTS

SEPTEMBER 12-13, 2009
CONDITIONS: Perfect 3-4 foot surf!
By: Miko Parker
We had a great weekend at Lahaina Harbor on September 12-13 for the fourth stop of the NSSA Hawaii tour. It was the best contest of the season yet as we were blessed with epic 3-4 foot surf which allowed for some red-hot surfing throughout the two-day event. Both Lahiki Minamishin and Ka’oli Kahokuloa scored perfect 10’s with the head judge calling Lahiki’s wave the best ride of the season thus far. Alisha Gonsalves ripped her way through all of her heats to end up on top in both Open and Explorer Womens. There is some new blood in the Explorer Girls division with Kiana Fores taking her very first win. Tanner Hendrickson took command in his local turf claiming his second straight in the Open Men’s while also ripping his way to first place in the Explorer Men’s. In the Explorer Juniors Matty Costa and Tanner battled head-to-head with Matty coming out on top. Seth Moniz took the win in the Open Boys and Kaunaloa Ng put on some impressive moves to claim his second win of the season in the Mini Groms.
THE OPEN WOMENS FINALISTS.

THE MEGA TALENTED HAWAII OPEN BOYS!
It was a beautiful weekend on Maui at Lahaina Harbor. The contest kicked off on Saturday, August 8 with the Open Season divisions. The competitors were having fun with 2 foot surf. Sunday, August 9 we continued with the Explorer divisions and the surf stayed fun and contestable. Local boy Imaikalani DeVault took the win in the Open Boys division while the other local boy Tanner Hendrickson was ripping throughout the day. The 17-year-old from Paia was absolutely on fire winning every heat in the Open Men’s division including the final. Tanner was putting 9’s and 10’s on the scoreboard while throwing away 8 point rides. We have a new women’s ripper on the Hawaii scene. 11-year-old Dax McGill put on an impressive show in both the Open Women’s and Explorer Girls divisions claiming both finals. Dax’s opponents Tatiana Weston-Webb and Bailey Nagy were shredding and giving her a run by getting some high scores but Dax was unstoppable! Bailey took second in the Open Women’s but came back to take a big victory in the Explorer Women’s. Ry Cowan showed off his improved surfing strengths winning his contest of the season in the Explorer Men’s. Maui boy Kain Daly was also tearing it up claiming his first win of the year in Explorer Boys. We were sad to say good bye to Andrew Neimann who will be leaving Hawaii and moving to Huntington Beach. We look forward to watching Andrew go to battle with the top kids on the west coast!
LOTS OF NEW YOUNG BLOOD IN THE WOMEN'S DIVISIONS!
NSSA Hawaii would like to give many mahalos to the Daly family for all of their contributions to our program. We would also like to thank Papa John and Aunty Donna and the Maui groms for feeding us all the good kind grinds!

NSSA HAWAII EVENT #2 GOES OFF ON KAUAI
There was rainbows, rain, and sunshine on the south side of the island Kauai. The contest was held at a local spot called PK's. It never rains on the south side in the middle of July but on Saturday July 11th NSSA Hawaii was being blessed. The surf was not that big at 1-2 feet but it was still shreddable. The small surf didn't stop Luke Hitchcock from throwing down 9's and 10's. He also had the highest scoring wave of the contest. Brianna Cope stepped up her game ripping her way to the Explorer Women’s final and taking her first win! Bailey Nagy, an Oahu girl, took her first win in the Explorer Girls. It came as no surprise that Seth Moniz destroyed the Open Boys and Explorer Menehuene finals scoring the double win. Kauai north shore local boy Kyle Galtes claimed a south shore double victory in the Explorer Mens and Explorer Juniors while taking a second to Ezekiel Lau in the Open Mens. And speaking of Ezekial, our newly crowned National Open Juniors champion has a new good luck charm: HIS HAIR!!! Ezekial wasted no time after his sensational Nationals performance taking a huge triumph in the Open Men’s.
NSSA Hawaii would like to thank The Beach House Restaurant, Kuhio Shores, and most of all Aunty Jody Stillwell.

Where to begin we had such an amazing nationals. We went in there and not only surfed our hearts out but also made a few new highlights with Kalani David giving the Koa Tree Foundations custom board he won to a very special competitor. He was from the southeast conference and also the youngest competitor in the nationals. (Noah Dovin) But we also had our very own Little Fella Koa Smith give The Open Mini Groms finalist Little Fellas designer jackets. What can we say we have some great ambassadors who know how to share the aloha spirt... Now on to the competition! While being down at Salt Creek they held all the Explorer and High School and Middle School divisions. We would like to congratulate Elite Element Academy on their amazing win... Keanu Asing showed what an awesome surfer he is in his High School Mens division with a huge win. We are so proud of the Elite Element Academy High School Team! Kiron Jabour left his last year with NSSA HAWAII as the Explorer Mens and Explorer Jrs champion! We are going to miss you Kiron but good luck on your next adventure... As for Ian Gentil what can we say he was on he had a double win in the Open Boys and Explorer Menehunes and a perfect score in his Open Boys division. The last person who had a perfect score was Clay Marzo from maui. Congratulations to our women Malia Manuel for taking the win in the Explorer women and Alessa Quizon with the Explorer Girls and Tatiana Weston-Webb in the Middle School Girls as well as Kelia Moniz in the High School women ... We had a stand out performance by Nage Melamed in the Open Womens she had the lead all the way to the last 5 Mins. this was her first Open Women final! WE ARE SO PROUD OF ALL OF YOU....

HAWAII'S FUTURE - THE EXPLORER GIRLS FINALISTS.
NSSA HAWAII CONFERENCE
OPEN AND EXPLORER EVENT #1
OAHU’S SOUTH SHORE “STRAIGHTOUTS”
MAY 23-24, 2009
CONDITIONS: BEAUTIFUL WARM WEATHER AND GOOD 2-3 FOOT SURF TO BRING IN THE 2009-10 SEASON!
By: Miko Parker
NSSA Hawaii kicked of their 2009-2010 season with a perfect event. It was a hot and sunny the entire weekend and the waves were a fun 2-3 feet. The contest was held on the south side of Oahu at a break we call “Straightouts.” On Saturday we ran all of our Open Divisions. We had a lot of newcomers to our Open Mini Groms which was also won by a “newbee” named Kaunoloa Ng. Kaunoloa is a Big Island boy who also took an impressive runner up placing to Kalani David in the Open Boys. Kalani was destroying it scoring a perfect 10 in the Open Boys and he also taking the victory in the Explorer Boys.
Alessa Quizon took a double win in the Open and the Explorer Women’s. Mahina Maeda started her season off with a big FIRST time win in the Explorer Girls division. To no-one’s surprise Kiron Jabour ripped his way into the Open Men’s final and took the win.
On Sunday Keanu Asing was running back and forth between the NSSA event at Straightouts and the “Surf into the Summer” event at Ala Moana Bowls. He had back-to back-heats in both contests. Keanu surfed his NSSA HAWAII Explorer Men’s final and at the end of the heat, a Jetski picked him up and drop him of at Ala Moana for his Surf into the Summer heat. Keanu Asing is NSSA HAWAII’S very own 007! Keanu is off to another fantastic start to the 09-10 season winning the Explorer Men’s final and making the Open Men’s and Explorer Juniors finals.
In this first event of the NSSA HAWAII 2009-10 season all of our surfers had a great time and a terrific warm up to what they have worked so hard for all year: The big showdown at the NSSA NATIONALS!

NSSA HAWAIIAN REGIONALS CHAMPIONSHIPS
NSSA HAWAII REGIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS PRESENTED BY RVCA
MARCH 21-23, 2009
KEWALO BASIN, OAHU, HI
Written by: Miko Parker
KEANU ASING TOOK COMMAND IN THE OPEN DIVISIONS.
The 2009 NSSA Hawaii Regional Championships kicked off on Saturday March 21 and ran through Monday, March 23 at Kewalo Basin. Hawaii’s top and up-and-coming surfers were on hand to battle for prestigious Regional titles and also to earn valuable 6-star ratings points towards qualification to the 2009 NSSA National Championships. Kewalos delivered three days of consistent good surf and great weather and the competitors took full advantage of the contestable conditions. Day one kicked off with the elite Open Mens competition. After plenty of heavy heats and tough competition, four of our most amazing surfers Keanu Asing, Kolohe Andino, Alex Smith and Lahiki Minamishin were left standing! But it was Keanu Asing who was in sensational form and came out on top to take the premier Open Men’s title and also nail the victory in Open Juniors. Keanu delivered a phenomenal performance in both finals posting perfect 10’s. Kolohe Andino made four finals taking the win in Explorer Boys while coming in a close second in Open Mens. Kolohe also made finals Open Juniors and Explorer Juniors.
ALESSA QUIZON SEWED UP HER SECOND STRAIGHT OPEN WOMENS REGIONAL TITLE.
In the Women’s categories, Alessa Quizon showed off her outstanding potential with solid maneuvers to clinch victories in both the Open Women’s and Explorer Girls. This was Alessa’s second consecutive Regional title in the Open Women’s. Two-time National Champion Leila Hurst ripped the Explorer Women’s final and looks to have an excellent shot at defending her Explorer Women’s title at the Nationals! It came as no surprise that Maui local Ian Gentil surfed his way into four finals claiming the Regional title in Open Boys. He also stepped up his game in the upper Explorer Boys age category with an impressive runner-up placing. Ian also placed 5th in the Open Juniors and 5th in the Explorer Menehuene finals! When the Open Mini Groms paddled out they immediately went to work pulling off moves to impress the judges! Dylan Lehmann posted 9’s in the final taking his first Regional Championship crown. Kaulana Apo battled hard with Dylan and came in a close second.
2-TIME NATIONAL CHAMPION LEILA HURST TAKES THE EXPLORER.
After all of the fantastic surfing came to a close, the contest was followed up with a great championship banquet at The Hard Rock! NSSA Hawaii would like to express its thanks to all of the individuals who came out to support NSSA Hawaii surfers and present special awards. 1999 National Open Men’s Champion Fred Patacchia, Rory Parker, Rico Jimenez were on hand to present their awards. There were also lots of our former surfers who provided special awards such as Dustin Barca,Joel Centio, Danny Fuller, Mikey Bruneau and Flynn Novak who could not attend but conveyed meaningful messages to all of our Hawaii surfers.
NATIONAL CHAMPIONS FREDDY P & KEKOA CAZIMERO GIVING BACK!
A huge thank you and shout out of appreciation goes to 2006 National Open Men’s Champion Kekoa Cazimero and The Koa Tree Foundations for the largest grant ever bestowed to NSSA Hawaii. A huge congratulations goes to Kalani David on writing an amazing essay and winning the Koa’s Ultimate Experience. This grant includes two round trip tickets to the NSSA Nationals, two weeks paid hotel, rental car, custom board and most importantly four Disneyland tickets and two night stay at the Disneyland Hotel! Thank you to everyone for all of your love and support!

Haleiwa Press Release
NSSA Hawaii held its Haleiwa contest on February 28 and March 1. Saturday’s event started off with wild winds and 2-3 foot surf. All of the Open divisions went off despite the howling winds and rain but the surfers made the waves look perfect. John Florence was killing it dropping 8’s and 9’s. Keanu Asing surfed amazingly throughout the contest dominating the field and scoring a triple win in Open Men’s, Open Juniors and Explorer Juniors!
As for our Women surfers, Hana Harrison claimed her first win in the Open Womens division. Alessa Quizon was also blowing up this weekend taking the victory in the Explorer Girls division as well as posting a perfect 10 in the Explorer Womens final which lead her to a win in that division. We also had a special guest on Saturday and Sunday. 11-time National Champion Carissa Moore came down to check out the Womens and Girls competition and also to support her little sister Cayla Moore! On Saturday, Kahanu Delovio was selected as our Surfco Surfer for the Weekend for always going out in her heats and then coming in with a BIG smile no matter how she did!
We are looking forward to seeing you all in a few weeks at the NSSA Hawaiian Regional Championships!

NSSA HAWAII'S TURTLE BAY RESORT PRESS RELEASE
NSSA HAWAII 5* RVCA PRESENTED AT TURTLE BAY RESORT
Since the holidays and huge surf we finally had a contest… We were proud to start off the New Year with an amazing contest at Turtle Bay Resort! It was a warm sunny weekend with 2-3 foot surf.
On Saturday we had to run double heats for half of a day with our Open Mini Groms, Expl Girls, Open Longboard, Expl Longboard running all the way to the finals at middles. We also had to run our first rounds of Open Boys, Expl, Boys and Expl Menehunes. For our stand outs this weekend we had a big first time win for Kona Oliveira in the Open Mini Groms, Dax McGill in the Expl Girls and Dylan Aoki-Walsh in the Expl Boys. As for our open divisions it was held at the main break POOLSIDE. There was outstanding surfing coming from the Carvalho brothers which both made finals in their divisions. Also Malia Maunel showed her power moves with a win in the Open Womens and 2nd in the Expl. Women With all this surfing NSSA HAWAII and the surfer wants to thank Wahoo’s for the yummy food! Sunday the waves were a bit smaller but that didn’t stop these surfers. Kalani David too a win in the Expl. Menehunes, Dylan Goodale made the finals in all 3 divisions winning ever heat all the way to the finals. But only taking a win in the Expl Mens… Our surfco surfer this weekend was Elijah Gates for always smiling and having GREAT sportsmanship! We want to thank all of our sponsors for making this all possible!
