KEALA NAIHE DEDICATED HIS WIN TO ANDY IRONS.
(Aiea, Hi – November 9, 2010) -- In an extremely emotional weekend for the NSSA Hawaii surfers, the opening morning of event #6 on the Big Island held at Banyans started out with a graceful and moving ceremony in honor of Andy Irons. A beautiful prayer was given by Manaka Delovio followed by a paddle out with all of the NSSA Hawaii surfers paying their respects to our fallen champion. Andy’s spirit blessed us with a morning shower and that was a start of an amazing contest with fun 2-3 foot surf and sunshine for the rest of the weekend. It was clear how much of Andy’s inspiration was felt by the kids as they all surfed and competed more passionate than ever.
KAUAI’S KALEN GALTES TOOK THE WIN IN OPEN JUNIORS.
NSSA Hawaii returned to the Big Island for competition after a two year absence and it was nice to be back. All of the kids surfed harder the ever for Andy. The Open divisions were run on day one Saturday and we witnessed four huge wins coming from Kauai. Congratulations to Kalen Galtes for winning the Open Juniors and Leila Hurst for taking the Open Womens. The victories were their first wins of the season. Tatiana Weston Webb claimed the victory in the Open Girls and on Sunday Mainei Kinimaka took her very first win ever in Explorer Girls. The wins were very special for Kalen, Leila, Tatiana and Mainei who all live on Kauai which was Andy’s home. All four dedicated their wins to him.
BANYAN’S LOCAL LOA NG SCORED TWO BIG WINS!
EJ Mitsui was on fire taking the win in the Open Mens which was his third of the season. The victory puts EJ in a huge lead in the Open Men’s ratings and he is sure to be one of our top contenders at the 2011 Nationals. Loa Ng claimed a double win at his home break at Banyans in the Open Boys and Explorer Menehuenes. Loa was very excited to have an NSSA Hawaii event back at his local spot. Devin Bruggemann had a great time in the Big Island nailing his very first win in the Open Mini Groms. Sunday was an exciting day for two-time National Champion Kalani David who blew up in the Explorer Boys final posting the highest score of the weekend. Makani Adric was in great rhythm in the both the Open and Explorer Longboard divisions walking away with double victories. Local boy and two-time National Champion Keala Naihe showed off his knowledge in his home turf taking the win in the Explorer Juniors division. During the contest, Keala expressed what all of the NSSA surfers, family and friends were currently feeling at the loss of their hero. “LONG LIVED THE CHAMP A.I. REST IN PARADISE…”
Finishing a beautiful and inspirational weekend all the kids dedicated the contest to “THE KING, LEGEND AND CHAMPION ANDY IRONS. You will be deeply missed and never forgotten.”
NSSA Hawaii would like to thank Makana Delovio and Ohana, Kona Bali Kai, and our great staff and judging panel. We would also like to extend our appreciation to all of our surfers, coaches and parents for their support.
NSSA Hawaii Sponsors: Atwater, Xcel, Aloha Kine, Bubble Gum, Kalani Robb, Jason Nalu Bogle, Surfco Hawaii, ASP Hawaii, Triple Crown, Equalibryum, Koa Tree, Wahoo’s Fish Tacos and the Honu Group.

KALANI DAVID RIPS TO DOUBLE WINS IN OPEN JUNIORS AND EXPLORER BOYS.
(Aiea, Hi – October 6, 2010) -- NSSA Hawaii kicked off the North Shore winter with event # 5 held at Sunset Beach on Oct. 2-3 2010. The competitors enjoyed solid surf all weekend with pumping 4-6 foot swell drilling the North Shore. The weather was a smorgasbord of conditions with sun, wind and rain but that didn’t stop all the surfers from ripping their heats. Randy Rarick from Triple Crown and Xcel’s Ed D’Ascoli were on hand at the contest to check out the big surf and watch the new generation showcase their talent. Matty Costa delivered an outstanding performance throughout the weekend ripping his way into the final and throwing up huge turns en route to his victory in the Open Mens division. The girls were charging the powerful surf while impressing the judges with their solid moves. NSSA Rookie of the Year Mahina Maeda claimed a double win in the Open and Explorer Womens. National Champion Kalani David set the pace with his radical style in the Open Juniors and Explorer Boys putting forth a dominating display in both divisions. In the Explorer Boys final, Kalani posted a perfect 10 and another excellent 8.0 for a 18.0 combined heat total. All the Explorer Boys were pushing the envelope in the final including Seth Moniz who gave Kalani a run for the win but came up just short taking second. Noa Mizuno clinched his first ever Open Boys win. The NSSA Outstanding Award went to Finn McGill for pulling a perfect 10 score in the Open Mini Grom final and finish with the victory. Three-time National Champion Ezekiel Lau continued his winning ways walking off with double victories in the Explorer Men’s and Juniors. Lau will without doubt be one of the leading contenders for the Open Men’s National title next June! "The Window" "Pocket" We got it!
NSSA Hawaii presented by RVCA held another great event this weekend at Pine Trees on the island of Kauai. The dads from the North Shore of Kauai knew what they were talking about !! We got the “Window” for the perfect weekend. The waves for NSSA Hawaii event #8 were 4-5 feet with perfect weather. We were told Saturday that the contest would have the "Pocket" of awesome surf before the huge swell that was right on target to hit and take over the break on Sunday. So we ran all the young kids on Saturday and saved Sunday for the big guys! The last heat of the day was the Explorer Juniors and what a heat! Matty Costa got the best barrel ever and took the victory in the Explorer Juniors final. Other standouts were Tanner Hendrickson, Nage Melamed, Imaikalani DeVault who were all double winners. NSSA Hawaii would like to thank everyone who helped this weekend including the Angulo's, Papa John and Auntie Amy!
THE OPEN MINI GROM FINALISTS.
NSSA Hawaii thanks our 2009-10 season sponsors: RVCA, Vans, Xcel, Koa Tree Foundation, Bubble Gum, Surf Co Hi, Jason Nalu Bogle, Wahoos Fish Tacos, Kalani Robb, Aloha Kine.
