KEALA NAIHE DEDICATED HIS WIN TO ANDY IRONS.
(Aiea, Hi – November 9, 2010) -- In an extremely emotional weekend for the NSSA Hawaii surfers, the opening morning of event #6 on the Big Island held at Banyans started out with a graceful and moving ceremony in honor of Andy Irons. A beautiful prayer was given by Manaka Delovio followed by a paddle out with all of the NSSA Hawaii surfers paying their respects to our fallen champion. Andy’s spirit blessed us with a morning shower and that was a start of an amazing contest with fun 2-3 foot surf and sunshine for the rest of the weekend. It was clear how much of Andy’s inspiration was felt by the kids as they all surfed and competed more passionate than ever.
KAUAI’S KALEN GALTES TOOK THE WIN IN OPEN JUNIORS.
NSSA Hawaii returned to the Big Island for competition after a two year absence and it was nice to be back. All of the kids surfed harder the ever for Andy. The Open divisions were run on day one Saturday and we witnessed four huge wins coming from Kauai. Congratulations to Kalen Galtes for winning the Open Juniors and Leila Hurst for taking the Open Womens. The victories were their first wins of the season. Tatiana Weston Webb claimed the victory in the Open Girls and on Sunday Mainei Kinimaka took her very first win ever in Explorer Girls. The wins were very special for Kalen, Leila, Tatiana and Mainei who all live on Kauai which was Andy’s home. All four dedicated their wins to him.
BANYAN’S LOCAL LOA NG SCORED TWO BIG WINS!
EJ Mitsui was on fire taking the win in the Open Mens which was his third of the season. The victory puts EJ in a huge lead in the Open Men’s ratings and he is sure to be one of our top contenders at the 2011 Nationals. Loa Ng claimed a double win at his home break at Banyans in the Open Boys and Explorer Menehuenes. Loa was very excited to have an NSSA Hawaii event back at his local spot. Devin Bruggemann had a great time in the Big Island nailing his very first win in the Open Mini Groms. Sunday was an exciting day for two-time National Champion Kalani David who blew up in the Explorer Boys final posting the highest score of the weekend. Makani Adric was in great rhythm in the both the Open and Explorer Longboard divisions walking away with double victories. Local boy and two-time National Champion Keala Naihe showed off his knowledge in his home turf taking the win in the Explorer Juniors division. During the contest, Keala expressed what all of the NSSA surfers, family and friends were currently feeling at the loss of their hero. “LONG LIVED THE CHAMP A.I. REST IN PARADISE…”
Finishing a beautiful and inspirational weekend all the kids dedicated the contest to “THE KING, LEGEND AND CHAMPION ANDY IRONS. You will be deeply missed and never forgotten.”
NSSA Hawaii would like to thank Makana Delovio and Ohana, Kona Bali Kai, and our great staff and judging panel. We would also like to extend our appreciation to all of our surfers, coaches and parents for their support.
