NSSA HAWAII EVENT #6 SCORES PUMPING SURF AT SUNSET BEACH!

NSSA HAWAII CONFERENCE

OPEN AND EXPLORER EVENT #6

SUNSET BEACH, OAHU, HAWAII

OCTOBER 8-9, 2011

SETH MONIZ RULED THE SUNSET LINEUP!

It was an awesome weekend at Sunset Beach for NSSA Hawaii event #6 as we started out the winter season with some pumping surf! We kicked the weekend off with our premier Open Divisions and competitors were pushing the envelope! The Open Mens final was a brotherly challenge between the talented Moniz’s. All three brothers made the finals and younger brother Seth was pulling out all the stops. Seth went on to take the victory while Josh took the runner up placing and Isaiah claimed the 3rd spot! Congrats to the Moniz brothers for always challenging each other! This was a first time in NSSA history to have three brothers take the top three spots in the prestigious Open Men’s division! Not only did youngest brother Seth step up to the plate with an impressive win in Open Men’s, he also sealed the victory in the Open Juniors.

BAILEY NAGY WAS ON FIRE IN OPEN WOMENS

In the Open Women’s, Bailey Nagy took the win while reigning National Open Girls Champion Dax McGill ripped to victory in the Explorer Womens. Another red-hot Hawaii grom is on the rise by the name of Wyatt McHale. Wyatt was tearing it up all weekend scoring an outstanding triple victory in the Open Mini Groms, Explorer Menehuenes and Explorer Super Groms. NSSA Hawaii would like to congratulate Zoe McDougall on her first big win in the Explorer Longboard! It was terrific to have a lot of newcomers to NSSA Hawaii at the Sunset event. Shawn Briley introduced his son Isaiah to the NSSA at this contest! Isaiah ended up making the final at his first NSSA contest and he was so amped. We were also so excited to see Torrey Meister’s little brother and sister at this event. Watch out at the Nationals because NSSA Hawaii has heaps of new hot groms coming in this 2011-12 season!

HOT GROM ON THE RISE WYATT MCHALE!

On a sad note, all of us at NSSA Hawaii bid a fond aloha to a dear NSSA dad. Mike Doherty you will truly be missed not only by NSSA Hawaii but by all of the NSSA. We love you Lani and Kulia!

Thank you to everyone who came out and supported our event at Sunset Beach. And a big thank you to NSSA Hawaii sponsors: Mad Love, Xcel, Rockwell Watches, Surfco Hawaii, Bubble Gum, Aloha Kine, Kalani Robb, Novus Swell

IAN GENTIL'S TECHNICAL AND EXPLOSIVE ATTACK!

Beautiful Lahaina Harbor on Maui set the stage for NSSA Hawaii’s makeup event #4 held on September 10-11. The contest presented by Mad Love was blessed with perfect 2-3 foot waves and amazing conditions throughout the weekend for the NSSA Hawaii competitors who were super hyped with the great surf. Maui boy Kain Daly was on his game ripping his way to double wins in the Open and Explorer Juniors. Reigning National Explorer Girls Champion Tatiana Weston Webb was destroying it throwing down 8’s and 9’s like it was no big deal. Tatiana was pushing the level in the Womens taking double wins in the Open and Explorer Womens. Newcomer Cole Alves took a huge victory in the Mini Groms…congrats buddy! Sibling rivalries are always fun to watch and we have a good sister act this season in the Longboard division with the Kui and Makani Adric. The sisters were going head to head in both Longboard finals with Kui triumphing in the Open and younger sister Makani sealing the Explorer victory. The Open Juniors final was the most heated and exciting final of the event with local boy Ian Gentil putting down the hammer with a near perfect 9.5 to clinch his first win of the season. Ian was also surfing at a dynamic level in the Open Men’s taking second in the final to Kain.

Thank you to the Pioneer Inn for the incredible accommodations…you guys Rock! Also a sincere thank you to Papa John and Aunty Donna for all the support to NSSA Hawaii.

Thank you sponsors: Mad Love, Xcel, Rockwell Watches, Surfco Hawaii, Bubble Gum, Aloha Kine, Kalani Robb, Novus Swell

CONDITIONS: Super fun 2-3 foot waves
By: Miko Parker

A NEW CLASS OF HUNGRY HAWAIIAN MINI GROMS FOR THE 2011-12 SEASON!
It was another beautiful day on the island of Kauai for the NSSA HAWAII event #3 of the 2011-12 season. The contest was held on the south side of the island at a place called PK’s. Weather and surf conditions couldn’t have been better with as the waves were firing with perfect 2-3 foot surf on offer for our competitors. Kids of all ages showed off their talent this weekend in the fun, rippable conditions. At this contest which was the first Kauai contest on the schedule, we witnessed an amazing new set of younger competitors. It was great to see all these young aspiring surfers come out and jump aboard the NSSA train. Newcomer Kainehe Hunt showed off his skills and knowledge of the break taking his first NSSA victory in the Mini Grom division.

NSSA HAWAII would like to welcome back Luke Hitchcock this year after a one year absence. Luke was excited to be back in action and proved it by taking an impressive victory in the Open Men’s final. and took his first win of the season in the Open Mens division. Kids all ages showed off their talent this weekend. The standout in the Women’s category was Brianna Cope who swept both wins in the Open and Explorer divisions. In the younger female categories, Mahina Maeda came out firing on all cylinders at PK’s taking both wins in the Open and Explorer Girls 14 & under divisions. Mahina continues to prove herself as one of the top young female talents in the country considering her impressive triple finals appearances at the 2011 Nationals including an outstanding 3rd place finish in the prestigious Open Womens division. In the Longboard division, Natalia Smith killed it with her clean maneuvers and smooth style scoring the double win in both the Open and Explorer finals. It was surely an inspiring weekend of performance surfing for all the NSSA Hawaii girls because they were red-hot in the double victories column! So congrats ladies! NSSA HAWAII would like to thank Aunty Jodi, Aunty Amy and Aunty Lauren and Uncle Danny for all their help and support!

2011 HAWAII REGIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP RESULTS!

Tuesday, March 22, 2011 | Written by Miko Parker

NSSA HAWAII REGIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS

KEWALO BASIN, OAHU, HAWAII

MARCH 17-19, 2011

CONDITIONS: Sun, wind, rain and great surf at Kewalos.

By: Miko Parker

OPEN MENS AND EXPLORER JUNIORS CHAMPION ISAIAH MONIZ!

(March 21, 2011) The Hawaii Regional Championships was held on March 17-19 at Kewalo Basin. It was a beautiful 3-day weekend with all the weather elements including sun, wind and some rain. But most important we scored great surf! The 2011 Hawaii Regional Championships serves as the Regional qualifier for Hawaii surfers to earn a bid to the 2011 NSSA National Championships presented by Nike 6.0, June 26-July 3 in Huntington Beach, California.

3-TIME NATIONAL CHAMPION EZEKIEL LAU TAKES THE EXPLORER MENS AND AIRSHOW!

On opening day, the surf was a fun 2-3 feet and the weather was beautiful. Competition kicked of with the first rounds of the Open divisions. Ezekiel Lau blew up in his home break at Kewalos posting huge 9.0 scores on the board. Maui surfers Chaz Kinoshita and and Imaikalani DeVault battled each other in the Open Juniors. Each of them were throwing up 8 and 9-point rides as easily advancing on to their next rounds. The Open Mini Groms put on an incredible show of progressive moves ripping his way to the finals with excellent 8.5 scores.

OPEN LONGBOARD CHAMPION HONOLUA BLOMFIELD SMOOTH AND STYLISH!

On day two of the Regional Championships, the contest was greeted with a eventful dose of mother nature including wind and rain in the morning. Once lunchtime came the sun was back shining on the championships and the kids were ripping. Matty Costa was the first to raise the bar posting the event's first perfect 10 point ride. After Matty started the trend of getting 10’s, Isaiah Moniz and Bailey Nagy were quick to join the club. Isaiah pulled off a huge air reverse, which posted excellent scores from the judges. Bailey performed some critical manuevers to receive her perfect 10. Young, bright star Tatiana Weston Webb posted a perfect 10 across the board in her Explorer Girls repercharge. Other standout surfers in the championships who were lighting up the scoreboard were Kaito Kino, Kaulana Apo, and Leila Hurst. In Longboarding, Honolua Blomfield triumphed in the Open and Makani Adric took win in the Explorer.

FINN MCGILL SHREDS TO DOUBLE WINS IN MINI GROM AND SUPER GROM!

All finals were held on day three, March 19th. The weather and waves cooperated with light winds, lots of sunshine and 3 foot surf. Leila Hurst pushed the level in the Explorer Women's final posting a near perfect 9.8. More than a few surfers stepped it up pulling off double victories. Isaiah Moniz enjoyed a monster performance in both the Open Mens and Explorer Juniors finals taking two enormous wins in both divisions. 3-time National Champion Ezekiel Lau was put on a show of progressive moves taking the victories in Explorer Mens and the Airshow. Leila Hurst proved why she is the leading contender for double National titles nailing the victories in both the Open and Explorer Womens. Seth Moniz was on fire taking double wins in the Open Juniors and Explorer Boys. Finn McGill put on an impressive surfing display claiming both the Open Mini Groms and Explorer Super Grom Regional titles. Dax McGill dominated in both the Open and Explorer Girls sealing both wins. BIG ISLAND BANYANS # 7

NSSA HAWAII EVENT #7 GOES OFF IN BOMBING SURF AT BANYANS!
Tuesday, January 18, 2011 | Written by Janice Aragon
NSSA HAWAII CONFERENCE PRESENTED BY ATWATER
OPEN AND EXPLORER EVENT #7
BANYANS, BIG ISLAND
JANUARY 15-16, 2011
CONDITIONS: Bombing 5-6 foot waves increasing throughout the weekend!

By: Miko Parker

MATTY COSTA CHARGING TO 3 FINALS!

What a weekend! NSSA Hawaii’s event #7 went off at Banyans on the Big Island with amazing surf conditions. Not only did we have pumping surf in the 5-6 foot range, but we also had so many standouts! This was a special contest for all the Big Island kids! We would like to remember Uncle Clement Junior Kanuha (CJ’s dad). You will be missed.

KYLEN YAMAKAWA STRAIGHT UP!

First off we want to thank the Kona Banyans crew. You guys rocked. Saturday was a beautiful day. Not only did we have snowmen on the side of the road, but we were blessed with beautiful honus and a whale which took the kid’s breath away. The waves were pumping, the stakes were highand the kids showed off their skills. Leila Hurst took the win in the Open Womens while Kain Daly took the win in the Open Mens. Kaulana Apo was on fire taking double wins in the Open Boys and Explorer Menehuenes. On Sunday, the waves picked up big time which gave the “big wave” surfers a chance to showcase their skills and strength. The Yamakawa brothers, Cole and Kylen, ripped their way into finals but didn’t have enough power to take down Matty Costa and Troy Weston Webb. Matty Costa was in his element taking command in the big conditions. Surfing at a high level, Matty charged to three finals taking the win in the Explorer Juniors and runner up in both the Open and Explorer Mens. Troy Weston Webb pushed the level in the Explorer Mens final claiming his first win of the season. Another big wave standout was CJ Owens who impressed the judges with his dynamic surfing. Imaikalani DeVault and Chaz Kinoshita challenged each other in the Open Juniors and Explorer Boys divisions battling for the win in both finals. Imai took the Open Juniors and Chaz won the Explorer Boys. Kui Adric took command in longboarding winning both the Open and Explorer divisions. With the swell building intensely generating strong currents and huge waves pounding the lineup, the Explorer Women’s and Girls were postponed until the next event.

CJ OWENS WAS OWNING IT!

NSSA Hawaii would like to thank the Big Island parents who provided lunch for all the kids and staff. Uncle Kalani, Jay Ng, Rodger Naihe, Keola Akao, Makana Delovio and family and the Kanuha family. We would also like to extend our appreciation to the Kona Bali Kai for a fantastic place to stay during the event.

NSSA Hawaii Sponsors: Atwater, Xcel, Aloha Kine, Bubble Gum, Kalani Robb, Jason Nalu Bogle, Surfco Hawaii, ASP Hawaii, Triple Crown, Equalibryum, Koa Tree, Papa John, Wahoo’s Fish Tacos and the Honu Group.
