MATTY COSTA CHARGING TO 3 FINALS!
What a weekend! NSSA Hawaii’s event #7 went off at Banyans on the Big Island with amazing surf conditions. Not only did we have pumping surf in the 5-6 foot range, but we also had so many standouts! This was a special contest for all the Big Island kids! We would like to remember Uncle Clement Junior Kanuha (CJ’s dad). You will be missed.
KYLEN YAMAKAWA STRAIGHT UP!
First off we want to thank the Kona Banyans crew. You guys rocked. Saturday was a beautiful day. Not only did we have snowmen on the side of the road, but we were blessed with beautiful honus and a whale which took the kid’s breath away. The waves were pumping, the stakes were highand the kids showed off their skills. Leila Hurst took the win in the Open Womens while Kain Daly took the win in the Open Mens. Kaulana Apo was on fire taking double wins in the Open Boys and Explorer Menehuenes. On Sunday, the waves picked up big time which gave the “big wave” surfers a chance to showcase their skills and strength. The Yamakawa brothers, Cole and Kylen, ripped their way into finals but didn’t have enough power to take down Matty Costa and Troy Weston Webb. Matty Costa was in his element taking command in the big conditions. Surfing at a high level, Matty charged to three finals taking the win in the Explorer Juniors and runner up in both the Open and Explorer Mens. Troy Weston Webb pushed the level in the Explorer Mens final claiming his first win of the season. Another big wave standout was CJ Owens who impressed the judges with his dynamic surfing. Imaikalani DeVault and Chaz Kinoshita challenged each other in the Open Juniors and Explorer Boys divisions battling for the win in both finals. Imai took the Open Juniors and Chaz won the Explorer Boys. Kui Adric took command in longboarding winning both the Open and Explorer divisions. With the swell building intensely generating strong currents and huge waves pounding the lineup, the Explorer Women’s and Girls were postponed until the next event.
CJ OWENS WAS OWNING IT!
NSSA Hawaii would like to thank the Big Island parents who provided lunch for all the kids and staff. Uncle Kalani, Jay Ng, Rodger Naihe, Keola Akao, Makana Delovio and family and the Kanuha family. We would also like to extend our appreciation to the Kona Bali Kai for a fantastic place to stay during the event.
